Empowering Voters

Oppose the Save Act quote
Stop the SAVE Act in the Senate

Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements of women all over the world. But while there is much to celebrate, there are still battles to be fought. The SAVE Act is one of those battles. Read Celina Stewart, LWVUS CEO's  article in Time magazine, "To Protect Democracy, We Must Protect Voting Access For Women."

Volunteer With LWVAA

Who should apply for the LWVAA Board?

We're looking for League members who want to build experience in League leadership. Skills and experience in the community, business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit world are helpful but aren't required. Equally important is a shared passion for empowering voters and defending democracy.

We need a Board Secretary

If you want to get started now and you have the skills, we have an immediate opening for the LWVAA Board Secretary position.

  • Reports to the board president
  • Serves on the Executive Committee
  • Keeps up with issues and agenda items in advance of meetings
  • Skills needed: using Google Suite, taking board and annual meeting minutes, recording attendance, determining quorum, and recording motions and decisions of board meetings
  • Training will be provided

Democracy in the News

Drivng for ERA
In 1916, two suffragists climbed into a bright gold Saxon motorcar named the Golden Flyer and drove 11,000 miles across the United States – through towns that had never seen a woman behind the wheel – in support of the radical idea that women deserved the right to vote.

This month, 110 years later, ERA supporters are driving for equality again. An original Saxon motorcar has been restored, painted the original gold color, and the Golden Flyer II is now Driving the Vote for Equality. The goal of the tour is to finish what those suffragists started: putting equality of rights under the law for all people into the United States Constitution.

The Driving the Vote for Equality Tour will be in Austin on March 24 and in Georgetown on March 25. Our own League headquarters at the Baker School will be one of the stops! Check our calendar for details.

Read the Ms. Magazine article "The Road to the ERA Runs Through Congress" describing the
25-state driving tour and national petition drive aimed to pressure lawmakers to recognize the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution.

Austin American Statesman: Read how "the council approved changes shifting reporting of lobbyist interactions with officials from city departments to lobbyists themselves. Critics warn it could make influence at City Hall harder for the public to track." 'The public should know': City Hall changes how lobbying is reported

Advocacy

"Coalitions hold the power to propel our democracy forward. In this time of chaos for our democracy, it’s imperative to focus on what brings us together instead of what divides us. Though these times feel destructive to the wellbeing of our democracy, there are ways to fight alongside one another for a shared sense of a better future."
